Are You Living a Lopsided Life?

The fast pace and ever-increasing intrusion of technology all too often disrupt the balance in our lives. Problems need to be solved and tensions, caused by differences or competing interests, need to be managed. Achieving balance is challenging to be sure. Accommodations and adjustments must be made during different stages of life, and when opportunities and unexpected circumstances occur.

The key, however, to creating balance is to build your life on a rock-solid foundation that is based on your values and principles. Taking time for introspection and planning will reap great rewards. Here are some tips for guidance.

Build a Foundation

Clarify your values and principles in life. Understand why each is important to you because you can’t adhere to something that you don’t believe in. Establishing boundaries and clarifying expectations becomes much easier when you are self-respecting and make choices accordingly.

Define Goals

Establish a few specific life goals (short and long term). You are much more likely to achieve them if they are clearly defined.

Keeping the Main Thing as the Main Thing

In other words, focus like a laser on a few priorities. Don’t be deterred or distracted from addressing the primary issues or goals. Remember, not everything can be the top priority, but you can accomplish what you are willing to work for – you just can’t do it all, all at once.

Recognize and Identify Your Own Emotions

This is the essence of emotional intelligence. The ability to handle your feelings appropriately and exercise emotional self-control while interacting with others is key to building trusting relationships and creating balance.
Awareness of other people’s non-verbal cues, listening deeply, having empathy and concern for other’s needs and feelings are the essences of social intelligence. They help to ensure smooth interpersonal relationships.

Understand That People Need People

We all know that we can’t do every job by ourselves, even if we want to. When you do help others, clarify expectations and establish appropriate boundaries.

Communicate Clearly

The ancient Chinese proverb, “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step” is similar to how each conversation and each interaction with someone matters. Earning trust and respect is key to developing meaningful and lasting relationships.

Unplug

Take a break from technology – really! Designate a specific time to unplug. No car radio. No headphones. No television. No emails, computer or games. No cell phone or texting. Better yet, take a physical break for at least a few days to refresh and restore.

You can achieve balance in your life! But remember, don’t be seduced by other people’s urgencies, demands and requests. Decide how, when, where and with whom to invest your precious time, talent and energy. Create a life that really works for you and is meaningful, fulfilling and joyful!
